In order to examine the usefulness of the right parasternal approach (ASA direction view) in detecting thrombi in the left atrium, two-dimensional echocardiography was performed using various approaches including the left parasternal approach (the long and short axis views), the apical one, the subxiphoid one and the right parasternal one in ten patients with mitral valvular disease and thrombi in the left atrium. In six of ten patients (case 1-6) thrombi were most clearly visualized by the ASA direction view and they were not so clearly demonstrated in other approaches. In two of ten patients (case 7, and 8) thrombi were very large and they were well visualized by both the ASA direction view and other approaches. In only two patients the right parasternal approach could not visualize thrombi while they were well observed by any other approaches (case 9 and 10). 　
These results demonstrate that the right parasternal approach (ASA direction view) is the most useful one in detection of thrombi in the left atrium.
