Echocardiographic findings of three children with a left ventricular aneurysm were reported. We diagnosed it by echocardiographic examination. The diagnosis was established with cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography. In every case, the left ventricular aneurysm was large and existed at the postero-lateral portion of left ventricle. The M-mode scan taken from the aorta to the left ventricular apex revealed an echo free space behind the papillary muscle, and also a decrease in left ventricular posterior wall excursion. Two-dimensional echocardiograms of the long axis of left ventricle and the apical four-chamber view exhibited aneurysm at the posterior portion of left ventricle in each case. Echocardiography of the short axis of left ventricle was also useful in the assessment of the dimensional relation between the aneurysm and true left ventricle.
We conclude from this study that echocardiographic examinations can clarify the details of left ventricular aneurysm in children.
