Out of 1,013 amputated breast cancer cases at the Cancer Institute Hospital between 1978 and 1980, 863 cases, 85.3% were examined by both ultrasound and mammography.
When the longer diameters of cancers were over 20 mm, diagnostic accuracy rates of ultrasound and mammography were around 90% independently of histological types. Cancers between 6 and 10 mm showed the low accuracy rate of 60% by ultrasound, but when they were over 11 mm, the rates were much improved into 80% and more, especially in cases of scirrhous carcinomas which amounted to 50% of all breast cancers. The low rates of papillotubular carcinomas between 6 and 20 mm were due to the difficulty in visualizing the grouped calcification well by ultrasound. The rates of these by mammography were about 10% better than those by ultrasound.
The characteristic of ultrasound in case of small cancers exists in analyzing the nature of tumors as a whole, while that of mammography in analyzing the grouped calcifications rather than the tumor shadows. Recently, calcifications in comedo carcinoma became well analyzed by 7.5 MHz; 1 inch concave transducer by new polymer.
