Recently, we have used the first and second models of the electronic linear arrayed ultrasonic endoscope manufactured experimently and its utility were evaluated. The first model is using a ordinary side viewing endoscope fixed with a ultrasonic probe measuring 50 mm in the terminal tip. Our experience with this model revealed that the handling within the stomach was not sufficient. Whereas the second model using a forward viewing endoscope that the terminal rigid part is shortened to 45 mm become easier to handle. With these instruments, organs in the epigastric region could be delineated but ultrasonic image of the gastrointestinal tract was not sufficient. Because the probe was too close to the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, we consider that more strengthing the angle deflection structure, development of a high frequency probe as well as attachment of a terminal balloon were needed. With further improvements, the electronic linear arrayed ultrasonic endoscope will be expected to be useful in the ultrasonic diagnosis of the epigastric organs.
