Changes in size of the inferior vena cava and their relations to venous return and central venous pressure were studied by measuring transverse corss-sectional area of the inferior vena cava corrected by body surface area, named as inferior vena cava index (IVC·I, cm²/m²) using cross-sectional ultrasonography. Measurements were done at the resting expiratory level.
In 14 normal men, aged 20 to 24 years, IVC·I was 2.23±0.10 cm²/m² (mean±SE). IVC·I tended to be slightly increased after leg raising to the angle of 70 degree (2.26±0.16, PPPPPIn 18 patients with various heart diseases IVC·I correlated closely with central venous pressure (r=0.93, P2O = 4.92×IVC·I – 1.67). In conclusion, IVC·I well reflects changes in venous return and central venous pressure.
