B-mode echo patterns which are obtained by ultrasonic pulse echo system show scattering strength of medium although it is influenced by sound velocity and attenuation of intervening medium. There have been many reports on sound velocity and attenuation of biological soft tissues but a few papers on scattering. The difficulty uncounted in the quantitative analysis of scattering has lied in the fact that it is not known how to describe the process mathematically. Recently we have reported the mathematical representation of echo which is based on discrete representation of medium. In this report echoes are analyzed quantitatively by using this principle. Echoes are classified into three types, that is, echoes scattered by deterministic medium, those by random medium, and those by mixture of deterministic and random medium. The possibility of tissue characterization is mentioned for each cases.
