The number of examinees submitted to cancer screening in Japan in 1981 was approximately 4,350,000 for gastric cancer, 2,760,000 for uterine cancer, 370,000 for breast cancer, 40,000 for thyroid cancer and some thousands for prostatic cancer or colon cancer. Among them, screening for gastric and uterine cancer is supported by the government by law but the other projects are still in testing stage. From these results, problems in cancer screening were discussed with special aspect on the system control and the effect of screening.
