In 1967, transrectal ultrasonotomography was developed by Watanabe, which was suitable for screening test for prostatic cancer because of low false negative rate and non-invasive procedure. Since 1975, the mass screening program for prostatic diseases using this method as the primary study, has been carried out in our Department. In 1980, a mobile unit was introduced into our project for increasing efficiency. The program has covered 2,394 male subjects more than 55 years age from January, 1975, to March, 1983. Prostatic cancer was detected in 12 (0.5%), in which 5 early stage cancer (Stage B) were included, and BPH in 755 (31.5%) of them. The average time per case inclusive all the factor was 3.5 minutes and the cost per subject for the primary study was within ¥4,000, including personal expense, repayment for equipment and cost of dispensable goods. It was thus proved that our mass screening program was useful and indispensable for the preventive medicine of prostatic diseases.
