Cardiac disease or death among working people is a socio-economical loss. The increasing morbidity and mortality of cardiac diseases including ischemic heart disease inevitably indicate a nationwide application of mass screening for cardiac disease. During the past two years, we examined echocardiography on 1069 people with positive finding or findings in routine cardiovascular examination performed in 88,000 adult people, and of these, echocardiographically uncovered various cardiovascular conditions were in 507 people. Although echocardiography provides more direct and diagnostic informations, it is expensive and time-consuming as a tool in mass screening at the present time, and there is no evidence to suggest that echocardiography is mandatory in every person. Echocardiographic examination can be successfully made as one of the second screening tests. Whenever echocardiography has to be applied to many people, we need to resolve many problems such as its technique, training of skilled technicians, and development of portable echo machines.
