In order to estimate the right ventricular systolic pressure, we examined the curvature-index (Δγ) was
obtained from the short axis LV two-dimensional echocardiograms in 26 patients with post-operative tetralogy of
Fallot (T/F group) and 32 patients with pre-operative atrial septal defect (ASD group). 20 normal
persons were used as controls.
The curvature-index (Δγ) was correlated well with the ratio of right to left ventricular systolic pressure
(PRV/LV). The correlative coefficient between Δγ and PRV/LV was 0.94 in ASD and 0.77 in T/F groups,
respectively. Δγ correlated well with Qp/Qs x PRV/LV (γ= 0.84) in ASD group.
We conclude that two dimensional echocardiography provides a useful index (the curature-index) to estimate the
right ventricular systolic pressure non-invasively.
