Ultrasonographic (US) findings of 4 patients of Budd-Chiari syndrome have been presented. 2 out of 4 patients had membranous obstruction of hepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (MOVC), while the other 2 patients had segmental obstruction of hepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (SOVC). Differential diagnosis between MOVC and SOVC was easily done by means of US. Obstruction ofhepatic vein (HV) at the junction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) was found in 3 patients. There were usually large communicating channels between obstructed HVs and IVC. Dilated short hepatic vein was identified in 3 patients, and splenomegaly was found in all 4 patients. The present study has indicated that US examination is very useful in detecting Budd-Chian syndrome.
