Ultrasonic examination was carried out in 4 consecutive cases of Crohn's disease. The diagnosis of which were
well confirmed by x-ray and endoscopy with biopsy.
The sonographic feature of the lesions of Crohn's disease were intraluminal stenosis and irregular thickening of the involved wall with hypoechoic internal echoes. The nodular lesions, which might correspond to the so called cobble stone pattern in a well developed case, was not clearly visualized sonographically when they were located in the colon. The nodular lesions in the duodenum, however, were sharply visualized as nodular patterns with heterogeneous internal echoes.
The simple and non-invasive ultrasonic examination is expected very useful for the follow-up study of Crohn's
disease, which would developed chronically with repetition of remission and relapse.
