Ultrasonic findings of 2 patients with mucocele of the appendix were reported.
The first case of a 70-year-old male complained of right lower abdominal mass. An ultrasonic scan demonstrated two continuous cystic lesions in the right lower abdomen. A smaller lesion in the cranial portion was observed as a "honeycomb"-like cyst, and other larger one in the caudal portion as an echo-free cyst. At operation, the appendix was dilatated, forming two continuous cysts. Smaller and larger cysts contained "jelly belly"-like and homogeneously gelatinous mucus, respectively. Histologically, the lesion was diagnosed as a mucinous cystadenoma. The second case of a 63-year-old female complained of right lower abdominal pain. An ultrasonic scan demonstrated an echo-free cyst in the right lower abdomen. At operation, the appendix was cystically dilatated and contained homogeneously gelatinous mucus. Histologically, this lesion was diagnosed as a simple mucocele due to the proximal obstruction.
