　In a study of 26 cases of liver hydatid disease, we divided the sonographic pattern into 5 types:
　　Type I—multiloculated cystic pattern
　　Type II—solitary cystic pattern
　　Type III—multiple cystic pattern
　　Type IV—mixed massive pattern
　　Type V—solid massive pattern
　Type I pattern was most commonly seen in our series. The finding of cysts within a cyst (multiloculated) on sonographic examination of the liver should raise the possibility of echinococcosis infestation. Characteristic sonographic features of the hydatid cyst wall include: thick wall, double layered structure, hyperechogenic calcification in the wall with or without shadowing the "water lily sign" or a floating echogenic germinal membrane, when the hydated cyst is infected, the characteristic sonographic appearance is lost and the cyst becomes diffusely hyperechogenic.
