Eleven patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were examined by high-resolutional real-time sonography (7.5 MHz).
Sonographic characteristics in the active phase of SAT were diffuse and slight adhesion between affected thyroid lobe and anterior cervical muscles (A.M. adhesion), and low echo area of the affected thyroid. A.M. adhesion was observed in all of the 11 patients, and low echo area was observed in 8. Forms of the low echo area were variable. The low echo area was decreased in size and number by treatment. Sonography was more useful for estimating cure of the disease compared with erythrocytes sedimentation rate and thyroid function. Creeping phenomenon could be observed by sonography in 3 cases out of the 11.
