　We performed ultrasonographic diagnoses on depth of invasion in 61 cases with gastric cancer (20 with early gastric cancer, 41 with advanced gastric cancer). Mean accuracy rate on depth of invasion was 72.1%, 40% in early gastric cancer, 87.4% in advanced gastric cancer. In case of early gastric cancer, the diagnosis was rather difficult.
　In this study we could point out two main factors that make the diagnosis difficult, one is the location of the gastric lesion, the other is the fibrosis or ulceration. Five layers structure becomes unclear at the lesser or greater curvature of the stomach, therefore the thickness of the gastric wall may give some diagnostic information for determining the depth of invasion. Invasive area of gastric cancer and fibrosis with ulceration show similar hypoechoic pattern, so it is difficult to differentiate each other.
