　In order to observe the characteristics of systolic and diastolic behavior of cardiac muscle in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), echocardiograms of the left ventricle were analyzed by an image processor in 20 patients with HCM and compared with those of 20 normal control subjects. The percentile changes of left ventricular dimension in patients with HCM at middle 1/3 diastole and late 1/3 diastole were larger and those at early 1/5 and early 1/3 diastole were smaller, compared with controls. The rate of dimension change in patients with HCM at late 1/3 systole, middle 1/3 diastole and late 1/3 diastole were higher and those at early 1/5 and 1/3 diastole were lower, compared with controls. The percentile changes of the thickness of the left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW) in patients with HCM at early 1/5 and early 1/3 diastole were smaller and middle 1/3 systole and middle 1/3 diastole were larger than those in controls.
