M-mode echocardiographic studies were performed on 25 appropriate for date babies (AFD) and 11 light for date babies (LFD) (nine were idiopathic, one was Rh isoimmunization, and one severe toxemia of pregnancy), within 7 days of delivery. Values of fetal cardiac transverse diameter (FCTD), ventricular dimensions of the cardiac chambers, left ventricular stroke volume (LVSV), and left ventricular cardiac output (LVCO) in LFD were significantly smaller than those in AFD, respectively. In the case of Rh isoimmunization with pericardial effusion of the fetus, LVCO, and LVCO/kg were low, and FCTD large. In the case of LFD in severe toxemia of pregnancy, FCTD, ventricular dimensions of cardiac chambers, LVSV, LVCO, and LVCO/kg were significantly small. Therefore, these results should be helpful to assess the in utero status of the fetus, in physiologic and pathologic conditions.
