It is well known that normal gastric wall shows ultrasonographically five layers. No agreement has been yet to be made as to histologic structures that these 5 structures represent. We carried out US studies of stomach phantom consisting of 3 acoustically different materials, 75 formalin-fixed specimen, and 12 fresh surgical specimen, using 3.5 MHz and 7.5 MHz transducer. Thereafter, we performed US studies in 15 normal subjects with fluid-filled stomach method, using 3.5 MHz transducer.
No significant sonographic difference was noted between fixed and non-fixed, fresh specimen of gastric wall. Layers 1 and 2 appeared wavy, and layers 4 and 5 appeared linear. The layer 3 showed two different features where folds were prominent, wavy on mucosal side and linear on serosal side. Significant difference was seen in the depiction of gastric wall with transducers of different frequency. With 7.5 MHz transducer the gastric wall showed 13 to 15 layers, instead of 5 layers.
