Ultrasonographic findings of 57 cases of solid thyroid tumors were compared with pathological findings. Thyroid nodules were examined with a real-time ultrasound diagnostic equipment (HI-TACHI EUB-40) with a 5 MHz convex probe using a jelly pack.
Previously, unclear border, irregular shape, uneven contour, small calcifications, direct invasion and lymph node enlargement were regarded as useful criteria for thyroid carcinoma. In this study, they had high true positive rate and high specificity, but had low sensitivity. Therefore, they were less useful criteria. Heterogeneous internal echoes and irregular halo were found to be more useful criteria.
1) Internal echoes:
Mass lesion with homogeneous internal echoes was compatible with follicular adenoma and one with heterogeneous internal echoes with carcinoma (p 2) Halo:
Mass lesion with regular halo was consistent with follicular adenoma and one with irregular halo was compatible with carcinoma with capsular invasion (p Hypoechoic mass lesion without halo and with heterogeneous internal echoes was compatible with papillary carcinoma or medullary carcinoma.
