A comparative ultrasonographic and pathohistological study was performed on 8 cases of metastatic liver cancer after chemotherapy. Echo level of metastatic lesion was mainly based on the grade of necrosis of the cancerous tissue, the lesion of low grade necrosis being shown as hypoechoic area and the one of severe necrosis hyperechoic. The mucin in the cancerous tissue was demonstrated as hypoechoic lesion too. Marginal hypoechoic zone, so-called halo, seemed to be caused by severe edematous change in the boundary between cancer and the surrounding liver tissue. The elevation of echogenicity of surrounding liver tissue was based on fatty change and necrosis. The clearness of the border is correlative to specific pathological changes. The understanding of the corresponding pathological findings of ultrasonographic features should be important for the judgement of therapeutic effect on tumors.
