US and CT findings were comparatively evaluated for 24 noduls detected in 15 patients with renal angiomyolipoma (AML) who were so diagnosed by angiographic, CT and histological examinations.
A hyperechoic patterns that characterizes the US findings of AML reflects the adipose component of the tumor. CT faciliated the diagnosis of AML, since a fat enriched tumor was visualized as a marked hyperechoic mass. However, a tumor with low fat component generally appeared as a hypoechoic mass for which definitive diagnosis even with an aid of CT was difficult. However, these cases had bilateral and multiple AML and all complicated with tuberous sclerosis.
