"Spleen Index" is a kind of technical word to be used to evaluate the splenic size by ultrasonography. This term is classic and still now important when we discuss the splenic size by ultrasonography. Many publications using "Spleen Index" have been accumulated rather disorderly in these days. The term "Spleen Index" is originally proposed by Asai and alternative parameter is proposed by Koga. These Asai's and Koga's methods are complicated misused occasionally.
The splenic sizes of 180 patients are measured by ultrasonography on the basis of both Asai's and Koga's methods simultaneously. These two methods closely correlate with each other and the values of them are essentially the same. The regression formula is: y=2.1+0.742x, n=180, r=0.9424, pIt suggests that the Japanese Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine will standardize the methods and terms regarding the measurement of splenic size by ultrasonography as soon as possible.
