In 1978, we developed a new technique for percutaneous puncture using a mechanical sector scanner. The development brought a widespread use of percutaneous puncture under ultrasonic guidance in various medical fields.
To examine how the interventional ultrasound has been distributed in Japan today, a questionaire was sent to all university hospitals and several big hospitals in July, 1986, targetting 686 clinics including internal medicine, surgery, urology, radiology, pediatrics and central laboratory. Among them, 420 (61.2%) clinics responded to the questionaire. Interventional ultrasound has been performed in 294 clinics (70%). The results indicated that ultrasonic guidance was applied to the most percutaneous puncture techniques instead of fluoroscopy.
