An ultrasonographic study was performed on 45 patients with chronic hepatitis. Hepato-renal echo contrast was detected in 19 patients. Fibrosis occupying rate and the grade of necrosis were not correlated with hepato-renal echo contrast in them. The fatty occupying rate in the liver of these patients showed 35% to 11% in 13 patients and less than 10% in 6 patients.
In these 6 patients, the hepatocytes taken from biopsy were clear and showed plant cell type. These results suggested that echogenicity of the liver in patients with chronic hepatitis was affected not only by fatty occupying rate but also by change of liver cells, particularly, clear or hydrophic swelling hepatocytes.
