1. Diagnostic capabilities of transrectal ultrasonotomography and other prostatic examinations (X-ray, CT scan, transrectal palpation and tumor marker) were comparatively studied in 160 cases with untreated prostatic carcinoma.
2. The ultrasonic images of the 160 cases with prostatic carcinoma were as follows: 1) Prostatic types were Type I (normal type) in 3%, II (hypertrophic type) in 19%, III (carcinoma type) in 78% and IV (immature type) in 0%. Cases with type III as classified by stage were Stage A in 0%, B in 52%, C in 77% and D in 91%, and the cases which showed typical carcinomatous type increased along with the stage in progress. 2) The cases each of whose adjacent tomogram showed non-similarity were 85% of the total cases. By stage, non-similarities were seen as A in 33%, B in 62%, C in 91% and D in 91%,trendof which became strong as the stages progressed. 3) Invasions into the adjacent organs were found to occur into the seminal vesicle in 61% (Stage C: 62% and D: 80%) and into bladder in 11% (Stage D: 23%) both of the total cases.
3. The results of diagnosis on 160 cases with prostatic carcinoma were 90% by ultrasonotomography, 41% by X-ray examination, 52% by CT scan and 70% by prostatic palpation, and positive rate of prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) was 75%. Bone metastasis was observed in 90% of the stage D cases, and serum alkaline phosphatase (AL-P) proved to be positive in 86% of these cases.
