As a diagnostic technique for juvenile polyp of the colon, ultrasonic examination together with tepid water enema was evaluated in this study. Ultrasonic examination with the tepid water enema was carried out in 3 patients after the barium enema, and in 2 patients after the clyster. In all the patients, polyps were visualized as an echogenic area and identified by both techniques. In 2 out of 5, a hypoechoic area was revealed in the polyp. This hypoechoic area was identified as the dilated secretory tubules existing in the polyp by histological examination. Faeces were differentiated from polyps by existence of the acoustic shadow and by changing of their location. As compared with barium enema and colonoscopy, the ultrasonography may be routinely applied as the surveillance method for the diagnosis of juvenile polyp of the colon, because it can avoid irradiation and is a non-invasive method.
