We report embryonic outcome in 1015 cases of heart beat visible in 5 to 7 weeks of gestation. None of the 21 cases with a visible heart beat at 5 weeks died. Of the fifteen embryos that died before 10 weeks (15/1015, 1.48%), 4 showed a heart beat at 6 weeks, out of a total of 265 cases (1.5094%); and 11 at 7 weeks, out of a total of 729 cases (1.5089%). Thus, the rate of death was the same in each week.
A linear relationship was seen between the times of these deaths as calculated by the ultrasonographic (US) size and the lengths of embryonic life at the first detection of a heart beat, as calculated by US size and the last menstrual period.
We concluded that:
1) In cases of embryonic death after appearance of the heart beat, various degrees of retardation of growing embryos begins from seven weeks of gestation;
2) These embryonic deaths occur around the beginning of nine weeks of gestation, and a variety of retardations of US size was seen;
3) In cases where no heart beat at all is visible, embryonic death occurs before six weeks of gestation.
