Examination, evaluation and analysis of the ultrasonographic (US) images of the liver and spleen was undertaken. The study was based upon 178 proven patients classified into three groups: hepatitic (62), cirrhotic (61) and control group (55). Evaluation of the US images was conducted with respect to seven independent findings: Hepatic Vein Narrowing (HVNARRW), Hepatic Vein Irregularity (HVIRREG), Echotexture of the Liver (ECHOTEXTURE), Surface Echo Irregularity (SURFACE), Liver Blunting (BLUNTING), Bright Liver Image (BRIGHT LIVER), and Spleen Size (SPLEEN). For each patient, each finding was examined and classified into one of three categories as follows: CAT1—considered to be in a "normal" range, CAT2—considered to reflect a marginal or obscure change, and CAT3—definitely abnormal. The chi-square test was applied to the categorical data in order to analyze the association between each finding and the groups.
