Ultrasonically (US) guided fine-needle aspiration cytology was performed on 111 thyroid nodules and 4
swollen lymph nodes accompanied with thyroid disease. Thirty-four nodules were cytologically diagnosed
as carcinoma.
Forty-five nodules were proved histologically. Accuracy of cytology was 84% and specificity was
especially high(91%). Accuracy rate of echographic diagnosis for such small nodules was 69% and
sensitivity was high (71%).
We consider that the combination of thyroid echography and fine-needle aspiration cytology is the most
reliable method for diagnosis of small thyroid nodules.
