Endoscopic ultrasonography was performed on nine patients with anomalous arrangements of the pancreaticobiliary ducts. These patients were already diagnosed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or percutaneous cholangiography. The diagnostic value of endoscopic ultrasonography in this area was evaluated. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed extramural pancreaticobiliary connections and slightly dilated upper parts of common channel in all cases examined.
The length of the upper common channel measured by endoscopic ultrasonography coincided the length measured by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or percutaneous cholangiography. Connection angles measured by endoscopic ultrasonography might be more accurate than those measured by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or percutaneous cholangiography. Endoscopic ultrasonography may be a useful new diagnostic means of evaluating abnormal connections of the pancreaticobiliary ducts.
