Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm which arises from the peritoneal lining of the abdomen. It is grossly classified into two types; diffuse or solitary. We encountered solitary type of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. A 54-year old man was admitted to our hospital because of further check up of abdominal pain and fever on April, 1985. Ultrasonographic findings showed multiloculated tumor which well corresponded with gross findings of the resected specimen. Histopathological findings revealed sarcomatoid type of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma by Kannerstein's classification. Ultrasonography might be a very useful diagnostic imaging not only to detect peritoneal and omental involvement, but also to delineate fine nature of the lesion in the process of diagnosing of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. The reported cases of this disorder in Japan from 1975 to 1987 were also reviewed.
