Transvaginal ultrasound images of ovarian follicles were compared with transabdominal images in 46 cyclic women. We used a transvaginal transducer (Aloka UST-938 PU-5, 5 MHz) with an Aloka SSD-630 sonograph, and a transabdominal transducer (Aloka UST-940-3.5, 3.5 MHz) with an Aloka SSD-650 sonograph.
The rate of ultrasonic follicle detection was 91.2% using the transabdominal method, 98.0% using the transvaginal method and 100% using both methods in combination (n=102). In most cases, visualization of follicle structures was excellent using the transvaginal approach, except for follicles located high in the pelvis. We found strong correlation (r=0.91, pThere were no significant difference in E2 levels in the peripheral blood on the day of hCG administration is the IVF cycles. This was determined by measuring follicle diameters with the transabdominal (n=20) and transvaginal (n=21) methods.
In summary, our results suggested that although the transvaginal method had some advantages over the transabdominal method, the selection of the appropriate method, in regard with the specific features of the case, contributed to a better evaluation.
