During a 10-month period from August 1988 to May 1989, 15 cases of acute gastric anisakiasis were encountered. In 10 of these 15 cases, the layers of the gastric wall could be demonstrated by ultrasonography. All 15 patients showed thickening of the gastric wall. The thickness of the gastric wall in these 15 cases was 12.7±3.3 mm (mean±SD) and it was significantly thicker than that of normal control (4.2±0.5 mm) (mean±SD). In 10 cases, in which five-layer of the gastric wall was demonstrated, thickening was found only in the third layer (8.7±3.0 mm) (mean±SD) of the gastric wall, and the remaining 4 layers showed no thickening. Thickening of the gastric wall completely disappeared within one week after removal of worms by endoscopy in all 15 cases.
