Two-dimensional echocardiogaphy was performed in three patients with a mobile thrombus in the left ventricle. Two cases had old myocardial infarction, and the remaining dilated cardiomyopathy. Each thrombus was confirmed to have originated from the false tendon at the time of surgery.
The echocardiographic findings included; 1) a mass echo in the left ventricular cavity not attached to the ventricular wall, or detection of a false tendon around the thrombus and 2) its pendular motion.
Therefore, a thrombus attached to the false tendon should be suspected when these echocardiographic findings are observed.
Limitations in detecting false tendon and discrimating between left ventricular myxsoma and thrombi were discussed.
