A history of the term "Ultrasonics in Medicine" was reviewed briefly. A definition of ultrasonics in medicine was proposed as follows: Ultrasonics in medicine is a composite research system consisting of clinical medicine, basic medicine and medical technology for ultrasound, in close cooperation between these three categories, and includes all the medical activity as regards to ultrasound. Based upon the fact that the past epochal advancements in ultrasound technology occurred not consecutively but stepwise, in every one decade, a prediction was made that a technological innovation next to Doppler color flow mapping will appear in the middle of 1990s, resulting in a considerable expansion of demand on ultrasonics in medicine.
