We investigated the accuracy of measurements of portal and superior mesenteric arterial flow by ultrasonic Doppler flowmetry using two types of probes. One flowmeter was equipped with a duplex probe consisting of a B-mode linear probe and a single probe for the Doppler mode. The other had a sector probe, which was used in both B-mode and Doppler mode. Using these flowmeters, two skilled observers determined the angle between vessels and the Doppler beam as well as the area, mean velocity, and flow volume in the portal vein and the superior mesenteric artery.
The angle using the flowmeter with the Duplex probe was significantly smaller than that with the sector probe. The percent difference and the coefficient of variation for all results obtained by the two observers were smaller with the duplex probe than with the sector probe. Moreover, intraclass correlation reliability coefficients for all results obtained by the two observers were larger with the duplex probe than with the sector probe. It is speculated that the differences obtained between the two probes were mainly caused by the smaller angle obtained using the flowmeter with the Duplex probe than with the sector probe.
These results suggest a flowmeter with a duplex probe is more accurate than one with a sector probe in the measurement of abdominal vessels.
