A desmoid tumor is a relatively rare benign tumor, composed mainly of fibroblasts and collagen fibers. However, its sonographic features have, until now, been only scantly reported.
The purpose of this paper is to report the case of a desmoid tumor, arising from the anterior abdominal wall, which was removed successfully by surgery, and to comment on the clinical, radiological and histological features of this tumor.
A 40-year-old woman, with a past history of a total hysterectomy, was admitted for a further evaluation of a mass lesion in the left lower portion of the abdominal wall which had rapidly increased in size in 6 months from 2×2 cm to 4×4 cm, measured by palpation.
Sonographically, it was a well-demarcated 5×6×3 cm hypoechoic mass with a heterogeneous internal structure including high echo spots and echogenic lines. A posterior echo enhancement was noted behind the lesion. These features were generally in agreement with those of recently reported cases examined with a high frequency probe.
In this case, as well as in the previous reported cases, the CT failed to demonstrate the internal structure of the tumor.
Sonography with a high frequency probe seems to be very useful for diagnosing soft tissue tumors.
