Incidence of parathyroid gland hyperplasia in 35 Dialysis patients not showing clinical signs of hyperparathyroidism were investigated by applying highly sensitive ultrasonography (7.5-10 MHz). The patients were divided into two groups. Group A consisted of dialysis patients with biochemical changes (with a high concentration of plasma phosphate and high titer of alkaline phosphatase activity). Group B consisted of those patients without any biochemical changes. Enlarged parathyroid glands were present in 9 of 19 cases (47%) in A group. On the other hand, 5 of 16 cases (30%) in group B had an enlarged parathyroid gland. The parathyroid gland was smaller in group A than in group B.
