Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy(ESWL)of bile duct stones is usually conducted using the
fluoroscope together with endoscopic sphinterotomy (EST). In this paper, We report the successful
treatment of the bile duct stones by ESWL under ultrasound without EST.
Eleven patients with common bile duct stones were treated by 18 ESWL sessions with the spark-gap
lithotripter TRIPTER X 1.
Complete stone clearance from the bile duct was obtained in 9 patients (81.8%).
The disappearance rate of stones less than 10 mm in diameter was 80.8% by one treatment, and those
more than 10 mm was similarly 83.3% by repeated treatments. The disappearance rate of multiple stones
was significantly lower than that of single stones (50.0% vs 88.9%).
Radiopaque stones were successfully disintegrated as well as radiolucent stones. No serious adverse
effects were seen during and after the treatment.
