Oxyphilic cell tumors in the thyroid, a component of follicular tumors, are of varying malignancy, and
it is hard to distinguish malignant from benign tumors before operation. Therefore diagnosis of oxyphilic
cell tumors before operating is helpful. However this diagnosis is difficult except through cytology. We
retrospectively examined ultrasonic findings in 15 patients with oxyphilic cell adenoma and 8 patients with
oxyphilic cell carcinoma who were diagnosed histologically. Ultrasonic examination was performed with
high resolution equipment using a 7.5 MHz mechanical arch scanner.
The characteristic findings of oxyphilic cell tumors on ultrasonography were hypoecho of the internal
echo and a marginal hypoechoic tendency. The rate of occurrence of these findings in oxyphilic cell tumors
was significantly higher than in other follicular adenoma. But we couldn't distinguish oxyphilic cell
adenoma from carcinoma, because their shapes were uniform, and calcification and invasive findings were
rarely found in carcinoma.
We suggest that ultrasonic examination is only helpful to distinguish oxyphilic cell tumors from other
follicular adenoma.
