To evaluate the influence of preload alteration on the blood flow velocity pattern in the superior vena cava (SVC) and pulmonary vein (PV), transthoracic and -esophageal Doppler echocardiograms were recorded at the control and during lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in 14 normal subjects. Without changing the heart rate or the mean blood pressure, LBNP decreased the peak velocity for early diastolic waves in right and left ventricular inflow velocity patterns and for second systolic waves in SVC and PV. There was a significant correlation between the change in the velocity-time integral of the second systolic wave of PV and the change in the velocity-time integral from the onset to the time of peak flow velocity of the early diastolic wave of the left ventricular inflow velocity pattern during LBNP. These findings suggest that the blood flow velocity pattern of SVC and PV could be influenced by alterations in preloading, which is related to changes in the left and right ventricular inflow patterns.
