The effects of vasopressin on the hemodynamics of cephald collaterals and the portal venous system were assessed using trans-esophagel and trans-cutaneous real-time two-dimensional Doppler echography.
In fourteen adult patients with liver cirrhosis, 5 units of vasopressin dissolved in 100 ml of 5% glucose were administered intraverously over 10 minutes. The mean velocity and the diameter of the following vessels, i. e. , esophageal varices, azygos vein, intercostal vein, intrahepatic portal vein, amd splenic vein, were compared before and after drug infusion. The blood folw volume index (BFVI),defined as mean velocity in cm/sec × the square of the diameter in cm², was also calculated Vasopressin infusion markedly reduced the mean velocity in the varices, azygos vein, intrahepatic portal vein, and splenic vein (-41%, -22%, -26%, -44%, respectively, p
