The correlation of the echo level with tissue fibrosis and thyroid function was examined in 70 cases diagnosed by percutaneous needle biopsy as chronic thyroiditis.
As the echo level dropped, tissue fibrosis showed a progressive tendency. Follicular degeneration and detachment also became highly advanced. A drop in echo level was noted more frequently in cases of thyroid hypofunction.
It is thought that ultrasonograms of chronic thyroiditis enable us to presume thyroid histology and functionality to a certain extent and are also useful for observing the course of a disease.
