A case with color Doppler sonography revealing the compression of the common hepatic duct by the right hepatic artery was reported.
A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of chronic cholecystitis with gall stones. The serum level of birilubin was slightly elevated, but those of other enzymes were within normal range. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography revealed a localized and unilateral shadow defect in the common hepatic duct. An abdominal CT scan didn't show any lesion, but color Doppler sonography detected the right hepatic artery crossing the common bile duct at the defect on cholangiography. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was indicated in this case.
The emergence of laparoscopic cholecystectomy as a popular alternative to traditional laparotomy and cholecystectomy has made preoperative examination more important, but it was difficult to detect small gallbladder and bile duct lesions by cholangiography or intraoperative laparoscopy. Color Doppler sonography was available for the diagnosis of gallbladder and biliary tract diseases as in this report.
