The purpose of this study was to assess blood flow dynamics in internal mammary artery grafts (IMAG) and saphenous vein grafts (SVG) using a Doppler catheter at the follow-up period after coronary arterial bypass grafting surgery (CABG).
We studied 13 patients who received a CABG to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) (6 patients with IMAG, 7 patients with SVG). Eight patients who had patent LAD were served as control subjects. The blood flow waves in IMAG, SVG and LAD were recorded using a Doppler catheter. The blood flow volume was calculated from the time velocity integral of the flow waves and the cross-sectional area of the vessels measured by angiography. The systolic peak velocity and the systolic peak velocity/diastolic peak velocity ratio in IMAG were significantly higher (pIn conclusion, systolic peak velocity in IMAG is higher than that in SVG and LAD. Diastolic peak velocity in SVG is lower than that in LAD. These results may be related to their patency. The blood flow volume in SVG was higher than that in LAD and IMAG; however, that in IMAG was not lower than that in LAD at the follow-up period.
