Eighteen cases of small renal tumors with homogeneously hyperechoic appearances were studied. Histologically,
the tumors consisted of 12 benign tumors (including 11 angiomyolipomas and 1 multilocular cystic
nephroma) and 6 malignant tumors (including 5 renal cell carcinomas and 1 renal metastasis from lung
cancer). The internal echo level of the benign tumors were significantly higher than that of the malignant
tumors, although there were no significant differences in the irregularity of the tumor contours.
Although multilocular cystic nephroma is said to exhibit a multiloculated hypoechoic or anechoic appearance,
our case of cystic nephroma showed a homogeneously hyperechoic pattern, mimicking an angiomyolipoma.
