We measured the Frequency Dependent Attenuation (FDA) and echo level of fatty liver in rats to estimate the fat content without biopsy. All specimens were induced by the carbon tetrachloride method and choline dificiency food method. The FDA values were measured in accordance with the spectral-shift zero-crossing method using a 7.5 MHz transducer, and the echo levels were compared with the standard material echo-level of agar with graphite using an echo intensity histogram. Lipid contents were measured by the Folch method and the water contents by the freeze dry method. We can differentiate fatty liver from normal control by measuring FDA or echo levels. FDA values exceeding 0.60 dB/cm/MHz or echo levels over 4 dB indicate fatty liver containing over 10% lipid in the rat liver. FDA values of the liver strongly correlated with the lipid contents (r=0.85, p
