Intravascular ultrasound imaging is a new technique for visualizing arterial structures. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of a newly developed 15 MHz intravascular ultrasound catheter in the evaluation of aortic dissection. In 13 of 15 patients with angiographically confirmed aortic dissection, the ultrasound catheter was easily introduced, readily manipulated, and images were successfully obtained. Adverse effects were noted in three patients during manipulation of the cathether. The procedure was performed safely, and the transmural morphology visualized by this new catheterbased technology allowed confirmation of the diagnosis and indentification of distal extension to the aortic bifurcation. Thus, intravascular ultrasound imaging with this newly developed 15 MHz transducer appears to be safe and useful for characterizing and quantitating lesions of the great vessels.
