We assessed the changes in the tricuspid regurgitant orifice area in sixteen cases with secondary tricuspid regurgitation using the color Doppler flow proximal isovelocity surface area method. In nine instants, we calculated the orifice area of instantaneous tricuspid regurgitation by dividing the instantaneous regurgitant flow rate by the velocity of a regurgitant jet. The tricuspid regurgitant orifice area decreased to 25% of its initial value during systole and increased slightly during isovolumic relaxation.
